China's top legislature concludes standing committee session
The Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) concluded its ninth session Friday in Beijing.
At the closing meeting, lawmakers voted to adopt an academic degrees law, a tariff law, and a decision to amend the Law on the Popularization of Agricultural Technology, the Law on the Protection of Minors, and the Biosecurity Law.
President Xi Jinping signed three presidential orders to promulgate the laws and the decision.
Zhao Leji, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the closing meeting.
Lawmakers ratified four treaties with other countries relating to judicial assistance in criminal affairs and extradition, and adopted a deputy qualification report and personnel-related bills.
Addressing the meeting, Zhao urged lawmakers to earnestly implement the work priorities and plan of the NPC Standing Committee for this year and perform their duties in accordance with the law, to better serve the overall interests of the Party and the country.
By conducting research, lawmakers should summarize practical experience, understand public opinion, and draw upon the wisdom of the people to enhance the quality and efficiency of their work, Zhao said.
Zhao also emphasized the importance of leveraging lawmakers' professional expertise and expanding their participation in the work of the NPC Standing Committee.
Zhao chaired a meeting of the Council of Chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee before the closing meeting and presided over a lecture for lawmakers after the closing meeting.
